In the dark of the night

July in the north ... it's summer, my dear;
Go out in the night, so warm, so clear;
Look up to the sky, away from the glow
Of all those cities, nestled below.

Far away to the north, high in the sky,
You may see a sight ... delight the eye.
A glow and a gleam, a vision so bright
Noctilucent cloud, shining, at night.

The sunshine we see, in the clear night air,
Shines on Alaska and polar bears.
While, here, in Europe, on mid-night ground we stand
Watching the sun from a distant land.

I Wonder ?

If I were to return to that farmhouse…

Where, through my first years, I grew up…
To stand looking out of my window…
O’er the valley’s misty morning cup…

Would I be me…or a stranger…
A person shaped by my sixty years…
By laughter, love, hard endeavour,
And sorrow’s grieving tears ?

(I am the baby in the top photo).
